One of Hunting & Fishing’s Greats, Babe Winkelman is one of the warmest, friendliest, and helpful guys you’ll ever meet. Early in 1996, I contacted Babe to do an interview, but more importantly to ask for some career advice. Babe, generous as always, talked to me for about an hour and then it was Babe’s turn to ask for a favor. Babe told me that everyone had done an interview with him, but what Babe really wanted was for me to do an interview with his father Don, who had just turned 72 and had gone on his first Black Bear hunt at the tender age of 71. How could I refuse? The favor and the great experience was all mine. I hope that you enjoy this story as much as I did writing it.
